Transgenic crops are created in order to add desirable genes that allow crops to have characteristics like improved yields, disease and pest resistance, drought tolerance, and improved quality. According to Kole et al. (201), transgenic crops were grown commercially in 114 million hectares in at least 23 countries. Transgenic crops have the potential to alleviate hunger in a world with an ever increasing population (Robinson 71). In addition, the adoption of transgenic crops can lead to the creation of cash crops that are resistant to diseases thus guara nteeing returns for farmers. Examples of these crops are tobacco and cotton. However, the issue of transgenic crops has become a battleground that involves politicians, scientists, farmers, lobby groups, and the general public (Robinson 71). Some typical concerns are whether transgenic crops violate the sanctity of nature, the impact of transgenic crops on the environment, and whether big corporations are using them for profit. One of the relevant aspects of transgenics is its impact on the environment. According to Robinson (72), the issue between transgenics and the environment arises from the debate on why the environment should be protected. One side argues that the environment should be protected for its intrinsic moral value, while the other side argues that the reason to protect it is because the environment is a valuable resource for humans (Robinson 72). A significant point to note is that different countries have different levels of interest about protecting natural envi ronments. However, a common thing with transgenics is that it can have both beneficial and harmful impacts on the environment. One of the possible benefits of transgenic crops is that they can be engineered to suit a specific environment (Robinson 72). According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, traditional forms of agriculture impact the environment in a number of ways. Large scale agriculture requires vast amounts of water, chemicals, and energy in order to ensure high yields. When it comes to chemicals, they are used liberally without considering their long-term effects on the environment (Union of Concerned Scientists n. pag.). According to the Nuffield Council on Bioethics (3), many of the transgenic crops under development will radically change the management of crops on farms, which will benefit the environment. One of the potential benefits of transgenic crops is that they can be designed to thrive in specific environments. For example, crops whose genes have been altere d to make them drought resistant can be planted in areas that have limited water resources. The plantation of these drought resistant crops can allow reservoirs and other sources of water to be allowed to recharge naturally as the strain of irrigation can be significantly reduced. Another way in which transgenic crops can be beneficial to the environment is in the area of chemicals. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, toxic insecticides and herbicides are accumulating in the ground and entering ground water systems and wetlands. Robinson (72) notes that genetically modified crops can significantly reduce the amount of chemicals that accumulate in the environment. For example, plants modified to have increased nitrogen fixation characteristics can eliminate the need for using fertilizers, which can significantly reduce the seepage of harmful chemicals into ground water and rivers through surface runoff. Another potential benefit of transgenic crops can be seen in ecology. Studies have shown using transgenic crops to target specific pests can lead to improved biodiversity. According to Carrington, a study conducted in China showed that the introduction of BT cotton resulted in an increase in the number of insect predators. The BT cotton in this case was designed to produce a bacterial toxin that is lethal to some insects (Carrington n. pag.). The rationale behind the increase in insect predators is that the introduction of this transgenic crop reduced the need for pesticides that were lethal to a wider variety of insects. The reduction in the use of pesticides led to improved biodiversity as insects like spiders, ladybirds, and lacewings increased in number. This increase had the additional benefit of reducing the number of pests affecting neighboring plantations with conventional crops. The potential benefit of transgenic plants is, thus, an improved biodiversity and the reduction of pests affecting conventional crops. On the other hand, transgenic crops have several potential risks. Some of the transgenic crops have been engineered to be resistant to the application of herbicides (Robinson 73). However, this presents a significant risk to conventional crops as the resistance to herbicides can potentially be transferred to weeds through natural gene transfer mechanism (Robinson 73). Drug resistant weeds present a significant risk as they can harm commercial farming on a very large scale. Another potential risk comes from the development of crops that are resistant to diseases. The developed resistance to viral diseases can lead to mutation and evolution of the viruses to become more harmful (Robinson 73). The harm from these mutations is that there will be a need to conduct expensive research to develop chemicals that can kill these new and harmful viruses/diseases. In addition, the resistant viruses can spread and affect other plant species in the natural environment.

Is there such a thing as justified killing? Many would argue that the killing of another individual is by far one of the worse crimes that can be committed. Though under certain circumstances such as capital punishment, or to kill in self-defense, justified killing is okay. These options are only acceptable if there is no viable alternative to doing so. Everyone has the right to live, and once someone decides to kill another individual then they should lose that right. They don’t deserve to have the right of life if they want to take the life of an innocent person. We get taught about self-defense and there are classes that people can take to protect themselves, but those classes do not tell you to kill someone, they just teach you the correct and an effective way to protect yourself. After reviewing the â€Å"Dying to be Thin† (2000) video and the two studies on anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) my view of these two disorders has been expanded and somewhat altered. The â€Å"Dying to Be Thin† video looked at the history, triggers, medical complications and treatments. It documents the struggles of models, dancers and teenagers with the disease. The two studies on AN and BN asked patients in a therapeutic setting to write letters to their disorders from the friend and foe perspective. The results were interesting and merit further studies. The â€Å"Dying to be Thin† video increased my knowledge of the historical and scientific aspects of these eating disorders. This is true in my case where I am naturally curious to know various things and I am imaginative when it comes to think of stories in my head about a specific aspect and I can spend hours on coming up with creative aspects of managing such things even at work. Being rational is the stronger aspect of my personality and I am a person who has a strong feeling in my head that intelligence us above all the aspects in life and effort and hard work are truly worth in order to achieve great heights in life. Although he wanted to skip college, Sol compromised with his mother and attended Syracuse University. While in college, he won a $1,000 award for his work creating lithographs. The grant helped fund a trip to Europe in 1949 where LeWitt studied the work of the Old Masters. Drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War in 1951, Sol LeWitt served in the Special Services and created posters among other duties. He visited many shrines and temples in both Korea and Japan. LeWitt returned to New York in 1953, set up his first art studio, and began working as a design intern at Seventeen magazine. He also attended classes at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. LeWitt joined I.M. Peis architectural firm in 1955 as a graphic designer. There he began developing his idea that art is a concept or a blueprint for creation, and not necessarily the finished work- meaning that the physical work could be executed by someone other than the artist. Jack Robinson / Getty Images After taking an entry-level job as a clerk at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1960, Sol LeWitt had firsthand exposure to the landmark 1960 exhibit Sixteen Americans. Among the featured artists were Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Frank Stella. Structures Showing independence from the tradition of sculpture in the arts, LeWitt called his three-dimensional works Structures. Initially, he created closed wooden objects lacquered by hand. However, in the mid-1960s, he decided it was necessary to reveal the internal structure leaving only a skeletal form. In 1969, LeWitt began creating his structures on a large scale often constructed out of fabricated aluminum or steel. X with Columns (1996). He started working with concrete in 1985 creating the cement Cube for a park in Basel, Switzerland. Beginning in 1990, he created multiple variations on a tower of concrete blocks for locations around the world. One of LeWitts final structures was the 2007 design for 9 Towers to be constructed in Sweden out of over 1,000 light-colored bricks. Wall Drawings In 1968, LeWitt began developing guidelines and diagrams for making works of art by drawing directly on the wall. At first, they used a graphite pencil, then crayon, colored pencil, and later India ink, acrylic paint, and other materials. Many of LeWitts wall drawings were executed by other people using his guidelines. LeWitt stated that the wall drawings are never the same, as everyone understands the instructions differently and draws lines uniquely. Andy Kropa / Getty Images A characteristic example of LeWitts wall drawing instructions is as follows: Draw all combinations of two lines crossing, placed at random, using arcs from corners and sides, straight, not straight, and broken lines. This example comes from Wall Drawing #122, executed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After moving to Spoleto, Italy in the late 1970s, LeWitt began creating wall drawings with crayon and other brightly colored materials. He credited the change to his exposure to Italian frescoes. In 2005, LeWitt began developing a series of scribbled wall drawings. As with his other works, the instructions for creation are highly specific. The scribbles are done with six different densities that ultimately imply a three-dimensional work. Major Exhibitions New Yorks John Daniels gallery mounted Sol LeWitts first solo show in 1965. In 1966, he took part in the Primary Structures exhibition at the Jewish Museum of New York. It was a defining event for Minimalist Art. The Museum of Modern Art in New York launched a Sol LeWitt retrospective in 1978. Many art critics embraced LeWitt for the first time following the exhibition. The 1992 Sol LeWitt Drawings 1958-1992 exhibit began at Gemeentemuseum in The Hague Netherlands before traveling to museums around the world for the next three years. A major LeWitt retrospective by the San Francisco Musem of Modern Art in 2000 traveled to Chicago and New York. Sol Lewitt Line Drawing #84 (2011). Andy Kropa / Getty Images A massive exhibition titled Sol LeWitt: A Wall Drawing Retrospective- a collaborative project of Yale University, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, and Williams College- opened in 2008, a year after the artists death. It includes almost an acre of wall space devoted to more than 105 drawings created to LeWitts specifications. Sixty-five artists and students executed the works. Housed in a 27,000-square-foot historic mill building, the exhibition will remain open for viewing for 25 years. Legacy and Influence LeWitts methods of using lines, shapes, blocks, and other simple elements made him a key figure in Minimalist Art. However, his primary legacy is his vital role in the development of Conceptual Art. He believed that concepts and ideas are the substance of art, not the final piece that is created. He also insisted that art is not about anything in particular. These ideas distinguished LeWitt from the romantic and emotional work of the abstract expressionists. LeWitts 1967 essay Paragraphs on Conceptual Art, published in ArtForum, is a defining statement for the movement; in it, he wrote, The idea becomes the machine that makes the art.
